The collection has everything from Dave's (Dave Foley) first day as News Director to Bill's (Phil Hartman) death (between Seasons Four and Five), Max Louis' (Jon Lovitz) replacement of the anchorman and the eventual closure of WNYX when the owner, Jimmy (Stephen Root), decides to retire.
The series starts off with the fresh out-of-college Dave Nelson starting his new job, but having to work up the nerve to tell his predecessor he is fired. Not only that, but it seems that another person on the payroll, Lisa Miller (Maura Tierney), seems to think she is the right person for the job. So not only does Dave have to keep an eye out for Lisa (something that he ends up quickly doing in the bedroom as the pair kick off a romantic relationship almost immediately), but he also has to manage straight-man Bill McNeal (Hartman), weird guy Matthew Brock (Andy Dick), secretary Beth (Vicki Lewis), second anchor Catherine (Khandi Alexander) and the aforementioned eccentric owner, Jimmy James.
There are quite a few interesting episodes in this boxed set. Not only are there the ones dealing with Phil Hartman's death and the after-effects of that event, but there are a pair of fantasy episodes where the cast reports from the Titanic and outer space, and the two-parter where Lisa is about to get married, but Dave tries to stop it from happening.
As far as late 90's comedies are concerned, NewRadio is pretty high up there. The cast worked well together and the fact that the actors worked well together really shows in the quality of the series. If you followed the series at all in its heyday, and haven't already picked up the individual seasons, then NewsRadio: The Complete Series might be worth a purchase, even at $50 (when you consider its five seasons of the show in one package) Do keep in mind that all the discs are stacked together on a single spindle, so the packaging lacks safe storage for your discs.
