Dresden can easily been seen as the American Jacques Clouseau (from the Pink Panther series), as his bumbling, slapstick manner somehow has him stumbling across and solving some of the most convoluted crimes. And this time, it is a plot to assassinate the Queen of England.
The investigation starts off when his friend and partner, Detective Nordberg (O.J. Simpson), is hospitalized when trying to stop a drug deal on the docks, but quickly escalates when Drebin suspects a high profile businessman, Vincent Ludwig (Ricardo Montalban from Fantasy Island) of being involved. Ludwig has his assistant, Jane Spencer (Priscilla Presley), get close to Drebin, but what Ludwig doesn't count on is the two falling in love.
The Naked Gun movies are made by the Zucker Brothers, who are known for other similarly styled films like Airplane and Top Secret, so fans of those other movies should know exactly what to expect when watching Naked Gun. Nielsen's slapstick and physical comedy is very distinct, and if you like his work, then you will like this as well.
Since Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! has been added to Paramount's "I Love the 80's" series, this particular release also comes with a bonus CD of four songs from the time. These songs include "Lips Like Sugar" (Echo & the Bunnymen), "Chain of Love" (Erasure), "Need You Tonight" (INXS) and "Take On Me" (a-ha). Oddly enough, this is the same four songs included on every other "I Love the 80's" re-release, so this added disc isn't all that great if you've already gotten one of the other DVDs. I think it would have been much better if the CD featured a few songs from the movie it was packaged with.
As for special features, there isn't really a lot to be had. Naked Gun comes with a commentary featuring David Zucker, Robert Weiss and Peter Tilden as well as the original theatrical trailer, so if you are looking for some prime extras, you will be sorely disappointed.
I've always loved the Naked Gun movies and enjoyed Leslie Nielsen's brand of over-the-top physical comedy. While I'm glad Paramount has released this DVD in their new collection, there isn't anything here to make someone re-buy the DVD, but those fans out there who have somehow managed to not yet pick up this movie might want to look into the purchase.
