As I just mentioned, Messengers 2: The Scarecrow is supposed to be a prequel to The Messengers. Unfortunately, not only is the movie boring, but I cannot figure out any possible way that it can be a prequel and fit in with the story of the first one. Messengers 2: The Scarecrow follows the Rollins family. Now, supposedly this is the family that lived in the house before the Solomon family from The Messengers, but considering they showed the Rollins family in The Messengers, they could have at least tried to make this family the right ages (the kids are definitely older than what age they died at according to The Messengers) at a minimum and preferably make them at least look a little similar. Not to mention the Rollins family grew sunflowers according to the first one, but here they grow corn instead. There are quite a few more differences, but I'd give parts of the movie away if I went into all them and I'd prefer not to spoil this gem of a movie for you.
In Messengers 2: The Scarecrow, the Rollins family lives on a farm making a living, or at least trying to, raising corn. Unfortunately, John Rollins (Norman Reedus) is having a hell of a time trying to make it. His corn just isn't growing very well and what is there is being eaten by the crows. To top it all off, the bank is breathing down his neck threatening foreclosure if he doesn't catch up on his overdue payments immediately! John is at his wits end when he discovers an old scarecrow hidden in a crawlspace in his barn. He isn't going to put it up, especially after his son Michael (Laurence Belcher) tells him he should get rid of it immediately. He is planning on doing just that after Michael is so insistent, but his neighbor Jude Weatherby (Richard Riehle) convinces him otherwise.
John hangs the scarecrow up in the field and immediately strange things start to happen. He wakes up the next morning to find the corn field full of dead crows, thus solving his crow problem. His neighbor's wife Miranda (Darcy Fowers) strips halfway down and starts masturbating on the side of the field where John can watch. Granted, that's probably the most popular part of the movie to most men watching since it's at least not boring. John also starts to see ghosts in the field, a little girl. He also starts to hear random voices. From here on out, people start dying and John is the main suspect. Now given that this is a prequel, if you've see The Messengers, you should know how it's supposed to end. Don't expect everything to turn out like that, though. Maybe there's still another movie coming that will fill in the gaps and fix things, but I seriously doubt it.
The DVD also includes commentary with Director Martin Barnewitz and Writer Todd Farmer if you really want to sit through it. Overall though, I would say to avoid Messengers 2: The Scarecrow. It's just plain boring and really doesn't fit in with the other one at all.
