If you've seen the first American Pie, then you know the type of humor that part two entails. This is not your parents' comedy! I think that's why it's so hard to watch as Jim's father catches him in the most awkward situations imaginable... again. How did he get so understanding, anyway? Speaking of parents, we finally find out what Stifler's mom's name is. And by the end of the movie, we also find out that... just kidding! Unfortunately, American Pie 2 almost seems to be lacking a bit of that punch the original had. It actually took a while to get over what I call the ?reunion syndrome,? where characters are re-introduced for the sake of those that didn't see how it all began in the first film. Frankly, it's a waste of time in my opinion, and the movie would have been served better by including some of the deleted scenes to fill time instead. Still, American Pie 2 has some hilarious moments that usually--ok, always--stem from some sort of sexual encounter, whether it be stripped down women kissing or a tube of super glue (use your imagination).
But where the DVD goes over the top is with features. If you're in to extras, you'll go berserk with American Pie 2. There are so many extras that it takes three full screens to list them out, spanning more than 10 hours of footage. Of course, this isn't as much as it sounds considering the four different feature-length commentaries from director J.B. Rogers, writer Adam Herz, and actors Jason Biggs, Mena Suvari, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kaye Thomas. The rest of the goodies (see features) consist of a fun look at behind-the-scenes footage from both of the American Pie films, as well as DVD-ROM features for your computer (which is cool, but the audio overlapping can get annoying).
One of my favorite Bonus Features on any DVD is the deleted scenes, and American Pie 2 boasts a string of them included on its disc. Some of the scenes were cut for obvious reasons, usually because of lengthy, needless story elements, but other scenes were quite hilarious. It's too bad these scenes couldn't have been incorporated into a second viewable version of the film. There are, however, different releases of American Pie 2, which include different combinations between Standard/Widescreen and Rated 'R'/ Unrated. Unfortunately, the review copy isn't the unrated version, but the rated R version instead. I also didn't see the theatrical release, so I'm unable to tell you if there are additional scenes on the DVD release. But any way you spin it, if you enjoyed the first movie, you'll like the second. American Pie 2 definitely has its funny moments, and is definitely worth picking up.
