Besides the Apatow films mentioned in the extra-long title, 41 year Old Virgin throws in nods to Twilight, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, There Will Be Blood and some oldies like American Pie, Star Wars and the now outdated Verizon "Can You Hear Me Now" commercials.
For the most part, the film follows Andy (Bryan Callen ... whom many might remember as the Pool Boy from MADtv many years ago), who is more-or-less Steve Carrel's character in The 40 Year old Virgin. Andy hasn't had much luck with women and when his friends find out that fact, they do whatever they can to help him out. These friends include Seth (Stephen Kramer Glickman), who is essentially every Seth Rogan character from the Apatow flicks and Blaqguy (Marque Richardson II, Shamari Berkley and Terrell Ransom Jr.), who ages backwards. During his friends' attempts to get Andy in bed with a lady, he falls for two women; one almost immediately flies off to a job in Hawaii, while the other ends up very pregnant after one night together ... too bad Andy wasn't actually involved.
As a side story to Andy's plight, another roommate of his, Jonah (Steven Sims ... who looks way too similar to Jonah Hill) and his friend Mc***lovin (Austin Michael Scott) go around town looking for alcohol so they can get laid at a party. What's funny about this particular pair of actors is that they look so similar to their Superbad counterparts, that they were approached for autographs at least once during the making of The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It. In their adventures, a fake ID lands one of them in the back of a police car with two cops, Officer Beat (Chris Spencer) and Officer Yo'Ass (Randall Park) who seem to play a bit too much Grand Theft Auto. Meanwhile, Jonah's mission will take even stranger turns as he finds himself in a Dateline-esque sting operation.
The 41 Year Old Virgin also contains a few interesting featurettes like the interview with Sims about his realization that a rising star, Jonah Hill, looks just like him. In this featurette, we not only hear Sims' story about all of his friends calling up when they see Superbad ads, but we also learn how hard it was for the film's creators to find someone to play Jonah since he has such a unique look and style. It wasn't until Sims made a video about looking like Hill and posting it on DestroyingJonahHill.com, that the creators were able to find their actor.
The making-of featurette is pretty much exactly what you would expect, minus the really fun stuff, that is the various special effects and gags used in the film. All of the behind-the-scenes effects info is crammed into "The Business of Gags" where we get to see how the team did everything from the vomit-filled car after one of Andy's dates, to Andy's final release at the film's conclusion. If you didn't realize it beforehand, this is a fairly dirty and nasty film that takes the style that Apatow has put forth in his movies and goes to an extreme with them. The last two special features includes interviews with the cast as they read about Callen's fan base from his years on MADtv, as well as a look at how the film was originally pitched and the fact that the creators had to actually create a teaser trailer for the film in order to get it sold.
While The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It might seem like another random sequence of pop-culture references, the film feels like it has a bit more substance and isn't just a random set of gags strewn together. If you've seen a good number of Apatow's films (and you like them of course), then this is a spoof you won't want to miss.
