Basically, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the story of a couple, Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon). While leaving a wedding, their car runs out of gas in the middle of nowhere. They walk to the nearest residence, which happens to be the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry). Frank, as he is called, is a scientist, one who is quite mad. Everyone in the castle is really very unusual to put it nicely. They're having a party and Frank is going to unveil his latest creation, Rocky (Peter Hinwood). In attendance are the handyman Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien) and his sister Magenta (Patricia Quinn) as well as Columbia (Nell Campbell). Making unexpected appearances are Eddie (Meatloaf) and later on, Dr. Scott (Jonathan Adams). There are also a group of very unusual guests of all shapes and sizes. As the night goes on, Janet and Brad are going to learn quite a lot about each other and the other people in the mansion. Of course, that description doesn't even begin to tell you about the hidden subtexts and overt sexuality everywhere, so I definitely don't recommend it for children!
Of course, the real amusement of Rocky isn't in the movie. The real entertainment comes from watching it with a group of people who know all of the user-created lines. Most of the dialogue in Rocky has perfect pauses to throw in very amusing comments that go with the real dialogue. Up until now though, you'd either have to learn them from someone or pull text off of the internet. In this new Blu-ray version though, you can turn on these comments in the special features menu inside The Midnight Experience. Also there is a "Prop Box" that will let you "throw" the rice and toast, snap the gloves, and quite a few other user-defined props as well! The Midnight Experience is my favorite new feature for sure! There are so many more special features than were even available on the 25th Anniversary DVD such as a new "Rocky-oke" Sing it!, The Search for the 35th Anniversary Shadowcast parts one and two, and new photo galleries. Plus it also contains most of the features from the 25th Anniversary Edition. The only one that I noticed is missing is the "Pop Up Video" of "Hot Patootie."
The quality on the new Blu-ray edition is quite noticeably better than the previous versions. You'll notice details that I'd bet you never caught before, like the "tear" on Janet's cheek after her encounter with Frank (you'll know what I mean when you see it now). The sounds is pretty much the same as before since the last release was in Dolby Digital as well, but the video quality alone, not to mention the new special features, definitely make it worth picking up this new 35th Anniversary release. Just be warned that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a movie that is nothing like anything you've ever seen before!
