Callie isn't just a pretty face. She's the wife of a man incarcerated for armed robbery and she's got a great 12 year old son named Jeff (Uriah Shelton) who really needs a male figure in his life, a role Jim slides into happily in an attempt to get closer to Callie. As the season progresses, Jim and Callie find themselves falling for each other, but Callie is still married and she doesn't want to cheat on Ray, her husband. Jim fights his feelings, even dating a pharmaceutical rep he meets at the hospital named Heather, but he can't shake his feelings for Callie and the pair eventually admit their feelings and decide to move forward. However, Jeff throws a few kinks in the works by making a surprise visit to his dad, on his own I might add, and Ray gets a renewed interest in his family, complicating Callie's feelings.
Aside from the overarching romance between Jim and Callie, there are plenty of great mysteries to be solved in Palm Glade. Cheating politicians whose mistresses get murdered, decapitated bodies half-eaten by alligators, dead bodies on the golf course of a ritzy country club, bodies buried in the muck, pirate treasure off the coast, horse racing -you'll find plenty of Florida-centric crimes that turn up in The Glades.
The cast is an interesting collection of characters and at times, reminds me a bit of Dexter with its beachy location, although it's got a much lighter feel to it. Jim Longworth doesn't take anything too seriously and flagrantly displays this attitude by refusing to wear his uniform and being irreverent in any way possible, much to the chagrin of his supervisor, Colleen Manus (Michelle Hurd). While his partner, Carlos, feigns annoyance, the pair make short work of crimes and really work well together, especially with the help of intern Daniel Green (Jordan Wall), who idolizes Carlos and does all of the research heavy-lifting for the team.
As far as special features go, there are a handful of deleted scenes, a gag reel, audio commentary here and there, plus featurettes on casting the show and working with a Florida location. Overall, if you like the humorous attitude of the original CSI and shows of that nature, you'll probably like The Glades. The acting is great, the storylines are interesting and I am keen to see where the relationship between Jim and Callie goes.
