G.I. Joe was an extraordinarily popular cartoon series back in the 80's. If you say "Now you know" to anyone who grew up during that time, they'll probably reply (or at least think about replying) "and knowing is half the battle" because that's how all of the PSAs from the original series ended. We all learned a lot from that cartoon and it was one of the defining shows of our childhood. The original G.I. Joe cartoons ended in 1986. In 1989, a new mini-series called "Operation: Dragonfire" was created, which is the beginning of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: Series 2, Season 1.

"Operation: Dragonfire" spans the entire first disc of the set. To recap, Cobra Commander had been changed into a cobra at the end of the original series and Serpentor is now in charge of COBRA forces. Destro has dumped the Baroness for Zerana, which really angers Baroness. Destro should know never to anger a woman who's that powerful and it'll come back to haunt him soon. In the beginning of the series, COBRA is after a weapon that monks at a monastery have access to for protecting a sacred statue. It's called the Dragonfire. The team has to save the monks and stop the COBRAs. There's a new character, Scoop, who is the camera man. He's quite rude sometimes, and he's a cobra spy. It would be nice if the Joes knew this, but of course, they don't. COBRA manages to get control of the Dragonfire, so now the Joes are going to have to stop them from being able to use it on a mass scale. While Serpentor is busy trying to secure the rest of the Dragonfire bases, Baroness and Gnawgahyde get control of the Dragonfire and use it to transform Cobra Commander back to human. This is going to split the power and really cause trouble in COBRA, allowing the Joes to gain some ground. Scoop has a real hard time being a double agent as he finds himself liking the Joes and their moral values. Scoop was told by COBRA that G.I. Joe blew up his house and so he joined them to get back at G.I. Joe. When he learns that he was lied to by COBRA, he has a total change of heart. All of this is going to allow our heroes to stop Cobra Commander from capturing the rest of the Dragonfire bases and save the day. After all, they're G.I Joe! With members like Sgt. Slaughter, Lady Jaye, Pathfinder, Ambush, and more, they can't fail.

The rest of the series are mostly one episode plotlines. They involve things such as a mind control gas that Pathfinder and Ambush have to stop before it isn used to take over the world. In one, Nightcreeper steals a pharaoh's headdress and after a bump on the head believes that he is the reincarnation of the pharaoh. Destro convinces Cobra Commander so that they can use that to their advantage to steal all the treasure from the city. Nightcreeper wants Lady Jaye as his queen, which really makes things amusing. Later, Metal Head's Granny comes to visit and since he's told her that the Joes are bad, she helps him against them. Metal Head's going to have to work to hide certain truths from Granny! In another episode, Hawk is out to prove that just because he's older doesn't mean he should be set to post on the recreation island. He's still got what it takes. When Sgt. Slaughter goes to visit his sister in NYC, he thinks he's there for a bit of relaxation, but of course, he's going to run into COBRA! Instead of fighting though, they play a game of football. I think the Alcatraz episode was one of the funnier ones to me, but the one where the Joes and Cobra Commander all get hooked on acting in Hollywood is a close second. These are just some of the many stories of the Joes versus COBRA.

G.I. Joe was a very important TV series in my childhood. Unfortunately, I don't think that Series 2 quite lives up to the original. The plotlines aren't up to the caliber of the original and honestly, I really miss the PSAs. If you're a huge fan of G.I. Joe, I'm sure you're going to want to see these anyway. They're not bad, but they're just not quite as good as the original series. Still though, it's worth watching G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: Series 2, Season 1 just to know you're seen them all.
