Do you remember the fantastic 80's movie with Elisabeth Shue, Adventures in Babysitting? It's an all-time favorite of mine, so when I saw the trailer for Jonah Hill's The Sitter, I was immediately interested. While not a complete reboot, The Sitter definitely gives plenty of nods to the 80's film and it also reminded me of Uncle Buck in that the main character, Noah, seems to "fix" all of the kids' various problems by the end of the evening, resulting in a happier family all the way around. Sure, it's unlikely, but it's sweet, as well.

Noah's (Jonah Hill) life is not optimal. He was kicked out of college during his senior year, he lives at home with his mom, and his "girlfriend" Marisa (Ari Graynor) only uses him for her own selfish sexual needs - and no, she doesn't sleep with him. When Noah's mom gets the opportunity to go to a fundraiser with a friend who is going to introduce her to a handsome, eligible doctor, it almost goes down the tubes when the friend's sitter cancels. Noah gets roped into the gig and he thinks he'll just spend all night on the couch vegging, but then Marisa calls, asking him to come to a party with the promise of sex if he picks up some coke. So Noah piles the kids into the minivan, including Slater (Max Records), a neurotic 13-year-old, Blith (Landry Bender), a makeup-covered celebu-wannabe and finally, Rodrigo (Kevin Hernandez), the adopted son from El Salvador who has a fondness for explosives and running away. What could go wrong, right?

I'm not sure what Noah was expecting from this "quick trip," but everyone gets more than they bargained for, including an angry drug dealer named Karl (Sam Rockwell) on their heels insisting on repayment for stolen drugs, several exploding toilets and businesses, a crashed Bat Mitzvah, a reunion with two of Noah's former classmates, and even a little romance along the way for Noah. There's an outlandish bar scene reminiscent of Adventures in Babysitting, but instead of having to sing themselves out of the situation, Noah exchanges odd sayings with a bar patron in a really amusing scene. Method Man also makes an appearance as the boyfriend of one of Noah's former classmates.

Unlike Adventures in Babysitting and Uncle Buck, The Sitter: Totally Irresponsible Edition is not family-friendly, although it stars several kids. Throughout the night, you'll see these children committing illegal acts, soiling their pants, cursing and otherwise misbehaving on a grand scale. While that, in and of itself, isn't so bad, the adults in the film are another story and there are two sex scenes, one involving nudity (in the Unrated version, anyway), plus numerous mentions of drugs. While the Unrated version merely spends more time in Karl's den, it's a strange place filled with drag queens, steroid-driven body builders, scientists creating drugs and a roller skating minion.

Special features include a number of deleted and extended scenes, an alternate ending, a gag reel, a making-of featurette, plus a handful of other nonsensical featurettes that are, nevertheless, fun to watch. The high-def Blu-ray version obviously looks more crisp and clear, but this isn't the type of movie that necessarily begs for high-def. However, if you want the version containing all of the extra goodies, plus an additional 6 minutes of unrated footage, you'll want the Blu-ray version of The Sitter: Totally Irresponsible Edition.

Overall, I thought The Sitter was pretty funny. I'm not a huge Jonah Hill fan, but I have enjoyed several of his movies and this one was amusing. Sam Rockwell turns in a truly disturbing but hysterical performance as Karl, however all of the actors do a good job in their roles. Again, not a film for the young tots, but those of an appropriate age who don't mind a bit of raunchy humor will probably enjoy it.
