"Spontaneously Combustible" is the first episode of the season and it is a really cute one. Ickis has a huge problem; he is burping flames. When the Doc takes a look inside Ickis, he tells him that he is "spontaneously combustible." The condition only lasts a week, but any little bump for the next 7 days could cause him to blow up! He wants to spend the week in his room, but Oblina and Krumm convince him to go to class anyway. As you can imagine, everyone else in the class is scared to be anywhere near Ickis! Their parents are scared as well and everyone starts moving out. Ickis is fed up with this, so he leaves on his own and runs away. As is typical, things aren't always what they seem and the other monsters are going to learn a lesson about listening to rumors.
Real Monsters is a fun show, but every now and then, there is a lesson to be learned. There are so many episodes that I love in this season! You might remember from Season One that Ickis made a human friend named Bradley. In "Into the Woods," Ickis has to do a human group scare alone. Gromble makes sure that Oblina and Krumm can't help, so Ickis decides to turn to his human friend Bradley for help. Bradley is going camping with a bunch of other guys and he's not looking forward to it because he gets picked on. Ickis decides to go with him and scare the group for his scare and then Bradley will "scare" him so that the guys will stop picking on him. It sounds like the perfect plan, but you can guess that things will go wrong! "This is Your Brain on Ickis" focuses on Ickis trying to scare a human. He is supposed to do it by touching the brain and infecting his dream, but instead Ickis manages to get stuck in the human's (Simon, the monster hunter) head. Things are quite humorous with Ickis in control of Simon!
Ickis is the star of a lot of episodes, but he's not the only focus. The Curse of Katana is a mummy's curse story, which is always interesting. The gang decides to add Krumm's eyes to the mummy to scare the scientists. The mummy doesn't seem to want to give the eyes back though! This is a huge problem as Krumm needs to be able to see where he's going. In another funny episode, "Krumm Gets the Dreaded Nolox," Krumm inhales too much perfume and is stuck with the hiccups. These aren't normal hiccups though, as he spews out recently eaten items with each one. Oblina and Ickis have to figure out how to cure him so they can finally get some sleep. "Monster Who Came In From The Cold/Puppy Love" has a note that it was taken from the best available master, but might have issues from the transfer. I didn't see that it looked any different from the other episodes though, so I'm not sure why there was a warning. In "Monster Who Came In From The Cold," Oblina is chosen to wear a "human suit" so that she can walk around and spy on the humans. She has to learn to act like a human to pull it off though! I do love the "lessons" that she learns about humans. When she gets stuck thinking that she's a human though, will they be able to get her back? I love the "Puppy Love" episode. The puppy (or "Bark n' Bite" as the monsters call them) is so adorable! Ickis names the puppy Fungus and the song really makes me laugh. To adapt a Cats song like that and make a reference to Lassie was just funny.
There are so many more wonderfully funny episodes that you should just watch rather than reading about more. Aaahh!!! Real Monsters was one of my favorite cartoons when it first came out and that hasn't changed. The episodes really hold up over time, as there's nothing that really connects them to the real world. I can't say that all kids will enjoy the series as it does take a bit of a twisted sense of humor to get them sometimes, but it is appropriate for the family for sure. If you're looking for a twisted cartoon to entertain your family, pick up Aaahh!!! Real Monsters: Season Two today!
