The unstoppable Cathy Jamison (Laura Linney) is back again in The Big C: The Complete Second Season. Determined to fight her cancer, and with the help, support and love of her husband, Paul (Oliver Platt) and son, Adam (Gabriel Basso), Cathy works to try to get into an experimental cancer treatment trial with a famed oncologist, Dr. Atticus Sherman (Alan Alda).

While in the trial, she meets the acerbic athlete and wine connoisseur Lee (Hugh Dancy), and while the two get off to a rocky start, they eventually realize they are soul mates, or rather, "mole mates." Lee teaches Cathy a lot about life, love, death and making the most of the time that you have.

Meanwhile, Sean (John Benjamin Hickey) and Rebecca (Cynthia Nixon) seem to be in parental bliss and even decide to make their relationship legal, until tragedy strikes, causing Sean to get off his meds again and go AWOL. Adam has some rocky times with girlfriend Mia and also ends up making an unlikely friend in Poppy Kowalski (Parker Posey), an odd gal he meets in a support group for kids whose parents have cancer. But Poppy is a lot more than she first appears.

While Cathy is doing well in her cancer treatments, Paul actually loses his job and he finds it hard to get something else. He has to resort to working at Max Buy, a large consumer electronics chain, where he meets Mykail (Boyd Holbrook), an illegal alien from the Ukraine who falls madly in love with Andrea (Gabourey Sidibe) and wants to marry her, but are his intentions true? Mykail is not only behind the theft ring at the store, but he gets Paul involved as well because he needs extras cash for Cathy's treatments and he also starts Paul back on coke, something he gave up in college for Cathy. Needless to say, this can't end well.

The season wraps up with Cathy running the New Year's Eve marathon, something she was warned against by Dr. Mauer (Reid Scott). As she crosses the finish line, everyone she loves is waiting there for her - both dead and alive, but there's a tragic surprise in just who is among her dead loved ones...

The Big C: The Complete Second Season carries on the wonderfully dark and funny story of Cathy Jamison and her fight against cancer. There are some truly laugh-out-loud episodes in this season, along with a few tearjerkers as well, and I can't say enough good things about this show. Linney and Platt are magic, but truly, the entire cast is perfect. Special features are limited to a handful of deleted scenes and some outtakes, but the series stands on its own. If you've been following Cathy's story, you'll want to pick up The Big C: The Complete Second Season.
