If you remember right at the end of last season, Jane (Brooke Elliott) tells Grayson (Jackson Hurst) that she is really Deb (Brooke D'Orsay) right after he had proposed to Vanessa (Jaime Ray Newman). Grayson didn't know what to do with this knowledge and ran into the street where he was hit by a car. The last thing he said as Jane was standing over him was "Deb". We have no clue if this meant that since he was near death he could see that Deb's soul is in Jane's body or of he was just thinking of Deb. We didn't know if he was going to live or die. Kim (Kate Levering) quit the firm after her relationship with Parker (Josh Stamberg) went south. On the positive side, Fred (Ben Feldman) and Stacy (April Bowlby) finally managed to get together; and they are an annoyingly cute couple.
Drop Dead Diva: Season Three opens with Jane sitting by Grayson's bedside dreaming of a musical number. Grayson still hasn't awoken and Jane really doesn't want to leave his side until he does, but she has to leave to take a murder case. She doesn't really want the case, but Stacy begs her to because she loves the actor accused of murder. When Grayson does wake up, he has temporary amnesia. He does recover most of his memory quickly, but he isn't going to ever remember immediately before the accident, which includes Jane's confession that she is really Deb. To add insult to injury, he asks Jane to be his best man at his wedding to Vanessa. Now she has to help plan the wedding of the man of her dreams to another woman. Jane really is a strong woman to force herself to go through all of this and remain friends with Grayson. It seems like Grayson has been on the verge of finding out Jane/Deb's secret so many times now, but will he finally see the truth this season? Even if he does, will he be too late? Jane's been working for years now to move on with her life as Jane rather than Deb and it seems like she's finally getting near a place where she can move on and be happy with someone else.
Fred and Stacy really are good together, but their relationship is going to be a challenge throughout the season. Fred isn't exactly a normal human male; he's never had sex before and isn't quite sure what to do. When Stacy's career starts to take off, she doesn't handle the success very well. She turns into a true diva and turns her back on her friends, including Jane, which I didn't think Stacy would ever do. Her friends are really going to try and get her back to normal. As I said before, Kim quit the firm after she and Parker broke up. Kim's first case on her own is hilarious! She does come back though, on her own terms. Kim is definitely becoming a better person, albeit very slowly. You can really tell the difference in who she is now and who she was in the episode where her sister Jenna (Kathy Griffin) needs her help in her divorce case. Kathy plays the perfect role as the elder Kaswell sister. Parker really wants Kim back and he'll try really hard, but he is in for a lot of surprises this season, both in his personal and professional life. Finally there is Teri (Margaret Cho). I love Teri. She brings in the most interesting cases and has the perfect combination of sarcasm and loyalty. This season doesn't leave anyone on the verge of death, but it does leave everything up in the air, some of them literally, leaving us all wondering what is going to happen next season!
The DVD set has no additional special features like the previous two seasons have had, but really, you don't need them. The season is chocked full of guest stars like Paula Abdul and LeAnn Rimes and the stories just keep getting better. I love that they really try to make a lot of the cases applicable to the real world, like the time where Stacy brings Jane a case of two high school lesbians who are denied a couple's ticket to prom. I really love how this episode plays out as I know the same situation has happened all over America in the past few years. The writers just do a wonderful job of making the show feel real and the actors are amazing as well. Brooke Elliott is, by far. the best. She does such a wonderful job of switching back and forth between smart lawyer and total ditz. It can't be an easy gig as she's essentially playing two people at once and yet she does it perfectly! If you're looking for a wonderfully done comedy/drama, I highly recommend that you check out Drop Dead Diva today!
