When we last left Jay, Zane, Cole and Kai, they had learned Spinjitzu, collected their new weapons, and confronted the Lord of Darkness only to have him escape the underworld and slip from their grasps. Well, while you might think the first season of the show would be about the four ninja and their support characters, including Kai’s sister Nya, going after Lord Garmadon, instead it takes an odd twist when the dark lord’s son, Lloyd Garmadon, shows up after leaving his evil boarding school.
Frustrated because no one takes his threats seriously, Lloyd uncovers a map that shows where the five tribes of the Serpentine race are entombed. His first encounter is with the cobra-like Hypnobrai Tribe and when their leader attempts to hypnotize Lloyd, the kid tricks the General and the snake ends up under Lloyd’s control.
Unrest in the troops begins to emerge when the Hypnobrai are sent on pointless missions and eventually the General’s second in command challenges his boss and wins. With the shift in power, Lloyd finds himself out on his own and seeking revenge against the purple snakes.
What results is Lloyd eventually befriending the only surviving member of the Anacondrai Tribe, Pythor, only to have him turn against Lloyd and decide to unite the five tribes with him as the Snake King.
Meanwhile, the four ninja learn of a prophecy involving someone named The Green Ninja. This ninja is said to be more powerful than the other four and he is destined to take down Lord Garmadon. Each of the four ninja try to prove themselves worthy of the Green Ninja title, but Sensei Wu claims that they all have a lot to learn and none of them have even found inner peace and unlocked their true potential.
It isn’t long before the ninja take Lloyd in to protect him from the fully awakened and united Serpentine race. They also learn of Pythor’s plan to release the snake race’s god, The Great Devourer, so that he may feed on everything in the world as revenge for being locked up for so many years.
The last half of the season features the ninja unlocking their true potential, learning more about their weapons, teaming up with a new hero named Samurai X, and even discovering who The Green Ninja is.
LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Season One’s 13 episodes really bring the toy line to life and give a lot of personality to the characters. While there are plenty of over-the-top situations coupled with punny humor, it’s all there for the kids’ enjoyment, and they will definitely have fun watching this show.
