At the end of Army Wives: Season Five, we found out that Fort Marshall is closing, which means that everyone will be moving to a new base. Pam (Brigid Brannagh) and family are moving to California; Chase (Jeremy Davidson) has already moved. The rest of the group will be relocated as well, which left us viewers wondering how there would be a Season Six! Army Wives: Season Six, Part One opens with a hurricane hitting the fort and surrounding areas. Originally,it is predicted to be offshore, but as we all know, hurricanes don’t always act as planned. This one hits the coast hard. Fort Marshall is hit, but thanks to proper preparations the damages are minimal. Fort Hope however is devastated. Several fatalities were reported and most buildings and vehicles were damaged or destroyed.
Due to this disaster, the decision is made from on high to close Fort Hope and keep Fort Marshall open instead. This means that all the wives are staying and Michael Holden (Brian McNamara) has been asked to be acting commander until a new one is appointed. If he gets the permanent job, it will mean a third star for him. General Kevin Clarke (Robert John Burke) is moved in with the 32nd Airborne and is also a two star general. He is also on the list competing with Michael for that third star. His wife, Jackie (Kelli Williams), comes in acting like she is ready to take over. She now in charge of the FRG, taking over from Claudia Joy (Kim Delaney), and it looks like she’s trying to steal Claudia Joy’s friends as well. Jackie is hiding a big secret though! Claudia Joy is going to have some real problems this season as well, but hers are going to once again be health related.
Frank Sherwood (Terry Serpico) has been promoted to brigade commander; Denise (Catherine Bell) is doing well in her job, and the baby has just turned one. After the loss of Jeremy (Richard Bryant) last season, it is good to see the Sherwoods recovering and thriving. Of course, they will have their share of problems this season, but nothing compared to last year. Jeremy’s ex-fiancée Tonya Gabriel (Erin Krakow) has a new relationship, which is good that she’s moving on after Jeremy’s death, but her choice probably isn’t the best one for their situations. Trevor LeBlanc (Drew Fuller) has been promoted to second lieutenant after going to Officer Candidate School between seasons. This means that he now has soldiers that he is responsible for. Hector Cruz (Joseph Julian Soria) is one that he really tries to help. Hector and his wife Gloria (Alyssa Diaz) were just married and she’s not adjusting to army life well. Of course with Roxie’s (Sally Pressman) help, Gloria finds a place. Since Pam has moved, Gloria is almost like a replacement in the show for her. I like Gloria. She’s a lot like Roxie was when the show first started, so it’s fitting that Roxie is mentoring her. Roxie doesn’t have to sell the bar since they’re not moving, which really makes her happy. She hires Gloria to help her.
David (McCarrie McCausland) (the HIV positive orphan) was officially adopted by Joan (Wendy Davis) and Roland Burton (Sterling K. Brown). David is going to have to overcome a lot of adversities, but he couldn’t ask for better parents to support him. Roland also starts an after-school group counseling session for teens at the request of Charlie (Ryan Michelle Bathe). Charlie is in charge of the after-school program on post. She’s a very interesting character with a lot more depth than you think when you first meet her.
At the end of last season, I was really concerned that Season Six would definitely be the last, but after watching Season Six, Part One, I have a much better feeling that the show can continue. I really like the new characters that have been introduced and they are still coming up with new concerns that feel legitimate to real life. The only bonus features were bloopers and deleted scenes. I miss the other features the previous seasons has had like "Army Wives Gives Back" from Season Three and "Hangin’ at the Hump" from Season Five, but I am hoping that featurettes like these will be on the upcoming Season Six, Part Two. The bloopers on this set really made me laugh though, so they were more than worth watching. Army Wives keeps getting better every year. If you’re a fan of the show or of drama series' in general, I highly recommend that you pick up Army Wives: Season Six, Part One today!
