In Your Eyes is a charming romantic film that has an oddly and unexplained supernatural twist.

Rebecca Porter (Zoe Kazan, The Pretty One) and Dylan Kershaw (Michael Stahl-David, Cloverfield) are two individuals from as different walks of life as you can possibly get. Where Rebecca is married to a doctor played by Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains), and living the life of high society, Dylan is a parolee just out of prison living in the middle of the desert and trying to hold onto his job at a car wash.

Under normal circumstances, these two people wouldn't meet, much less happen into a blossoming relationship. Out of the blue, the pair start to be able to see through the other's eyes and hear the other person's words. Naturally, the two characters don't know how to handle the strange development, but they quickly develop a friendship as they spend hours each day talking about their lives and realizing that they have actually shared this strange connection all of their lives.

Unfortunately for both Rebecca and Dylan, the other people in their lives start noticing the strange behavior each one is exhibiting. Rebecca's fellow socialites start to wonder if Rebecca is having an affair, while her own husband begins to worry about a relapse over the mental breakdown she experienced several years ago. Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, Dylan's job suffers and his high school friends are trying to get him to take part in a new heist, despite Dylan's regular visits from his parole officer.

In Your Eyes is an odd romantic movie since the two characters are only in the other's heads. In fact, if it weren't for mirrors, the pair wouldn't even know what the other looks like. As a result, the film feels like watching a lengthy phone call where the two actors have to play off of each other even though they aren't in the same room at the same time. Where I can see this coming out as wooden or stiff, Kazan and Stahl-David, pull it off really well.

I have to say, In Your Eyes caught my attention for one reason only - it was written by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers and oh so much more). While I might have watched this movie at some point given its different take on the genre, it really was Whedon's name that made me take notice. Given that, I can't say for certain that my view of the movie isn't slanted given my Whedon fanboy status, but attempts to look at the movie from a more objective point-of-view makes me think I would have enjoyed it regardless of knowing Whedon was involved.

In Your Eyes doesn't come with any special features, and while enjoyable, I can't say it's a movie I would see someone watching over and over again. At most, In Your Eyes is a good date-night rental, but unless you are a major fan of the people attached to this film, it isn't really worthy of buying.
