The film follows two high school seniors, Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera), who have been best friends since they were seven. Now though, the pair is getting ready to graduate and go to different colleges. As graduation looms, the two characters also worry about their sex life and want to get some action before they get to college. Each sees an upcoming party as their last chance (wow, this sounds familiar). When the hot chick that is throwing the party, Jules (Emma Stone) asks Seth to pick up the alcohol and Evan finds out his long-time crush will be there, they both think they might actually get a chance. Unfortunately when their friend with a fake ID, Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) goes in for the liquor, the place gets robbed and he ends up going on an adventure with two local cops, Officers Slater (Bill Hader) and Michaels (Seth Rogen). Meanwhile Seth and Evan have to find another source of booze. From this point on, the two stories (Seth/Evan's and Fogell's) diverge with a ton of mayhem and awkward situations, but every now and then they overlap in fairly humorous ways. There were quite a few moments when it seemed like the jokes or crude statements were put there for nothing more than shock value and it seemed like quite a few of these took away from the overall movie, but on the whole I enjoyed a lot of the movie and after looking back to high school realized that most of those statements weren't necessarily out of place.
As interesting trivia, the writers of the movie, Seth Rogen (yes, the cop; he can also been seen in 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up) and Evan Goldberg, started writing this when they were much younger and it is supposedly them as teenagers.
As for the Superbad: 2-Disc Unrated Extended Edition DVD, not only do you get the movie itself, but a ton of special features. You get the standard commentaries, gag reels and deleted scenes as well as featurettes about the music and Michael Cera. The two disc set also contains footage from Seth Rogen reading the part of the younger Seth and cast auditions. Simply put, fans of the movie will definitely want to pick up this particular version since it is just packed with extras. If you still aren't sure if you want to see the movie, but you at least enjoyed the American Pie films, Superbad is worth a rental at least. That being said, this movie is most definitely not for everyone.
