While this film can be easily categorized with these similar movies, it has its own style because of the frequent breaking of the fourth wall. Not only will Adam (the main character played by Gary Lundy) talk directly to the audience, but several characters throughout the movie will interrupt the film and talk to the camera as well. This isn't a new technique by any means, but Senior Skip Day pulls it off really well, especially when both Adam and his long-time crush who, of course, has a long-time boyfriend, Cara (Kayla Ewell) both talk to the camera at almost the same time, thus having to separate conversations with the viewer.
While elements like the frequent conversations with the audience are a nice breakaway from the standard teen film, the story feels very tried and true. Adam is a model student, he is about to graduate top of his class, and he is generally well liked by all. As the news of where the senior skip day party will take place filters around the school, Adam inadvertently informs the schools principle (Larry Miller) who puts a stop to the party and is kind enough to let the whole school know it was Adam that told him.
When Adam finds out that one of his classmates' brothers recently died in a horrible parachuting accident and his funeral just happens to be on senior skip day, he convinces Principal Dickwalder that the school should be closed in memory of the day. Adam quickly plans a party at his house getting everything from booze to models together, and all while hiding the fact from his mother (Lea Thompson) and older sister (Tara Reid).
Thankfully, the party seems to be a success since they have a little something to make everyone happy (including a huge gravity bong for the stoners of the class). Meanwhile, Dickwalder realizes that a party is still being held and drives all over town looking for the location in hopes of stopping yet another fun time.
There aren't any special features on this DVD, besides a slew of previews for other films by First Look Studios, but for the most part, the film stands up on its own. While not the greatest film, it is entertaining for those who enjoy the more recent style teen movies have taken. There is, of course, topless women, frequent drug and alcohol usage and a stereotypical teenage love story, everything you need for a high school film.
