Pretty in Pink is a classic John Hughes teen romance starring Molly Ringwald as Andie, a creative girl from the wrong side of the tracks who catches the eye of handsome rich boy Blane (Andrew McCarthy). Unfortunately, the kids that run in Blane's social circle don't take too kindly to Andie's appearance in his life and do everything they can to make Andie feel unwanted and unworthy of his time and attention. To complicate matters, Andie's best friend, Duckie (Jon Cryer), urges her to stay away from the "richies", partly because he doesn't want to see her heart broken, but mainly because he, himself, has always loved her dearly and longs to tell her how he truly feels.

But get together they do, when Blane comes to seek Andie out at her workplace, Traxx, the record shop owned by quirky punk rocker chick Iona (Annie Potts). Duckie is devastated and tries to break up the couple by making a pass at Iona and trying desperately to get into Andie's favorite club, whose door is vigilantly guarded each evening by Andrew Dice Clay. And the Diceman doesn't like poor Duckie.

Blane tries to mesh Andie into his crowd by inviting her to a party thrown by his best friend, Steff (James Spader), and things go horribly wrong. Steff and his girlfriend, who are well on their way to complete drunkeness by the time Blane and Andie arrive, humiliate and insult Andie and she wants nothing more than to leave. And why is Steff so dead-set on making sure Andie and his best friend don't find happiness together? Because when he hit on Andie, she wanted nothing to do with him and he can't stand it.

Blane asks Andie to the prom and she is thrilled, but she tries to keep him from finding out where she lives, because she is so ashamed. She is poor and her dad (Harry Dean Stanton) spends his days lying in bed, unmotivated, ever since Andie's mom abandoned them both. But Andie makes the best of things and designs her own clothes because she likes to be different. She even makes her own dress for the prom by combining one her dad bought her and Iona's prom dress. It's pink, of course, and very ugly, in my opinion.

Soon, Blane isn't returning Andie's calls and the prom is off for the pair, with Andie's heart in pieces. It seems Blane's friends have won after all, but Andie holds her head up high and goes to prom anyway. At prom, Blane and Andie put aside their financial differences and work things out, in true John Hughes/ happy ending tradition, and even with Duckie's blessing, however difficult that may be.

Pretty in Pink is classic John Hughes. So much angst back then! But seeing Molly Ringwald in her prime is lots of fun and Cryer does a good job in everything he undertakes. What is cool is watching for people who because famous later like a young Gina Gerson as a high school friend to Steff's girlfriend and of course, Andrew Dice Clay. Annie Potts is a delight in her role as Iona and Spader's character is utterly dispicable - you will hate him.

Overall, if you are an 80's fan, then this is must-have stuff for your collection. The bonus CD has some pretty cool tunes on it and is a plus, but I wish they had different songs for each movie. "Pretty in Pink" by the Psychedelic Furs, for example? Hello? But anyway, the movie is good and although it has no other features aside from the CD, if you've been jonesin' for some classic Molly Ringwald, then this is it.
