A Change of Faith

A Change of Faith by Roger Kazanowski centers around a pivotal change in the Catholic Church - female priests are now allowed. Not everyone in the faith is happy about it, specifically some high ranking officials at the Vatican, and they will stop at nothing to see the ruling overturned.

Charlotte Kotlinski is one such woman who is planning to become one of a select few female priests, however a few kinks threaten her plans. For one, she recently met a kind artist named John Adams and the two definitely had sparks. They begin a relationship and Charlotte becomes John's muse as he is driven to complete incredible paintings, which causes him to find a nice measure of notoriety in the art community. Then the unthinkable happens - Charlotte breaks it off and offers no reason, but of course, her reason is her desire to become a priest.

Fast-forward and Charlotte is now Vicar Kotlinski and John Adams' art is wildly sought after. He has managed to get his paintings into The Neumann Gallery and his popularity has skyrocketed. John is dating a sweet Italian girl named Maria and he and Charlotte have reconnected and become dear friends. However, their perfect lives are rocked when they discover a wicked plot that may be targeting Charlotte's very life, and it has already taken the lives of two other female priests.

Can this cabal of evil stemming from Rome be stopped before the ruling for female priests is overturned? It'll take the help of some highly placed friends in the oddest of places, if Charlotte has any hope of getting through this alive and retaining her priest's collar.

A Change of Faith was an interesting read that went all sorts of places, but it felt to me like it wasn't sure whether it wanted to be a drama, romance, mystery, or thriller. It had its exciting moments, but it also had its lulls. It was a different twist on religion, and the premise of female priests being targeted is an interesting one, I just didn't feel compelled to burn through it. When it does wind to an end, it's a satisfying one, but I wouldn't call it a thrill ride. However, if you enjoy books with a religious focus that also have a thriller bent to them, you might like A Change of Faith.
