For starters, Hannah thinks she is seeing someone who resembles Miss Carmichael, a wealthy woman from the 1800's who often helped those less fortunate in Henderson Close, at least until she was beaten to death by local thugs, one of whom escaped the noose and was never caught and brought to justice. The location of Miss Carmichael's death is a regular stop on Hannah's tour, so perhaps these regular visits are fueling her hallucinations?
But then her co-worker Mairead starts experiencing weird things as well, like slipping into the past and finding herself on an old cobblestone street in Henderson Close. Initially, Hannah is relieved to find someone else experiencing these things, but then Mairead disappears without a trace after going back underground for her keys after work one night and then Hannah starts to really panic. At least her co-worker George seems understanding, as he's had a few odd things happen as well. He was there with Hannah when a group of ghost-hunters rented out the place one night and a Ouija board session got a little too personal with Hannah. Then there are the sightings of a tall, spindly, demonic-looking creature that make things that much worse, not to mention the little girl with the rag doll, but no face. Could something evil have been let loose during the construction and expansion of the underground area, and if so, is another entity trying to set things right with Hannah and George's help?
If Hannah has any hope of retaining her sanity, she knows she must get to the bottom of this mystery, especially since these visions and even physical attacks are following her home. But in trying to solve Miss Carmichael's murder, Hannah just might find herself in deeper than she ever could have imagined.
The Haunting of Henderson Close is a fun read and a good spine-tingler. There are some truly scary moments in the book and some interesting bits of old Edinburg as well. While it ended on an interesting and unexpected note, I did feel like there were a few things left hanging, especially regarding specifics about Hannah's co-worker Mairead, but overall, it's a good read and a fun yarn.
