Humans are not alone in the galaxy; there are a wide variety of aliens, from animals almost like those of Earth to intelligent species which we would only expect in horror films. The Cielcin would be the latter; impossibly strong and zealous warriors that stand taller than a human, but are built more like bugs. Well, if bugs had sharp, clear teeth and fed on humans. And could speak, use weapons, and had faster-than-light travel. Since this race came into contact with humans, the two have been at war. It's drug on now for hundreds of years.
Hadrian grew up on tales of an adventurous hero who, against all odds and despite monumental cultural differences, found a way to form a peace with an alien enemy through communication and mutual understanding. This was Hadrian's desire and goal with the Cielcin. He learned to speak their language. He met with them. He learned that these alien monsters are, in fact, more alien and monstrous than he had thought.
As a child, Hadrian wanted to be a Scholaist...a scholar. Instead, he finds that he becomes a Knight of the Emperor. He wanted to sue for peace, but has become the most renown and accomplished warrior in the war against the Cielcin; the imperial soldiers all know of his legend - even the Cielcin know his name.
Hadrian has had more than his fair share of luck. He's made a name for himself - heck, he's become somewhat of a legend. "The Devil"... because of his family's crest. The "Halfmortal"... on account of the inexplicable fact that he was struck dead by a Cielcin... and yet, he's somehow... alive. He's traveled quite a ways across the galaxy, but, perhaps, not as far - or fast - as his legend. In Demon in White, Hadrian will learn some of the mysteries of why the fates have been on his side and what his part is in the big picture. He also learns more about those in his past and what's become of them. While he's at it, he will have to deal with his growing, if unwanted, celebrity and find himself under dangerous scrutiny by the Chantry and the Empire, alike. Not to mention having to deal with the Cielcin. He will gain insight that may help him overcome the most ruthless Cielcin warlord, yet. But, will he lose the love of his life along the way?
If you are intrigued by the idea of a galaxy-wide empire that patterns itself after the Ancient Roman empire, you might like The Sun Eater series. If you like your heroes Chaotic Good and beloved by their comrades because they earn their respect and loyalty, Hadrian's your guy. If you've already read the first two books, then by all means, get in here.
If your interest is piqued, but you haven't started the series, please, please, please start with Empire of Silence and let the story unfold naturally. Demon in White may be the most exciting book in the series, so far, but it's because things from earlier develop in interesting ways. I highly recommend this book, but in its appropriate place in the series.
